Molecular Methods in Microbial Ecology

چکیده
It is now generally accepted in microbial ecology that cultivation-based approaches provide an incomplete picture of microbial diversity in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract because only a minority of microbes can be obtained in culture. Therefore, the application of molecular approaches, especially those focused on 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequence diversity, have become popular as they enable researchers to bypass the cultivation step. These approaches have provided considerable information about microbial ecosystems, including the GI tract. This chapter will summarize the different approaches and their impact on our knowledge of the ecology of the GI tract and provide guidelines for future research directions with a focus on preand

Microbial Ecology Exemplifies Building Ecology
Recent advances in molecular methods have dramatically improved knowledge of the microbial communities and their diversity in indoor environments. We have retrieved over 150 references with results of indoor microbial investigations and environmental factors. Representative papers are summarized here. The results show that buildings are complex, ecosystem-like, and that collaboration between mi...

(eds.), Microbes and Microbial Technology: Agricultural and Environmental Applications, DOI 10.1007/978-1-4419-7931-5_2, © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011 Abstract Culture-based methods are important in investigating the microbial ecology of natural and anthropogenically impacted environments, but they are extremely biased in their evaluation of microbial genetic diver...
متن کاملMolecular Methods of Studying Microbial Diversity in Soil Environments
Microorganisms live in all parts of the biosphere and are critical to nutrient recycling in ecosystems. In recent years, the development of methodologies for the analysis of microorganisms and microbial ecology, at the molecular level, has progressed phenomenally. This review introduces and compares the various molecular methods for studying microbial diversity in soil environments, and the adv...
متن کاملMicrobial ecology in the age of genomics and metagenomics: concepts, tools, and recent advances.
Microbial ecology examines the diversity and activity of micro-organisms in Earth's biosphere. In the last 20 years, the application of genomics tools have revolutionized microbial ecological studies and drastically expanded our view on the previously underappreciated microbial world. This review first introduces the basic concepts in microbial ecology and the main genomics methods that have be...
